In 1851, the Florida State Legislature authorized the all-male Seminary West of the Suwannee on the property of the Florida Institute in Tallahassee. The first classes were held in 1857 and in 1858 females were admitted in a seperate department called the Female Institute which operated until 1882 when the Seminary became coeducational. Francis Eppes was the grandson of Thomas Jefferson and a long-time resident of Tallahassee, FL; he came to Florida in the 1820's and served as mayor of the city and head of the Seminary West of the Suwannee, which eventually became Florida State College for Women and later Florida State University.
